Creating Space

Starting June 29th, 2025, a six-week course from Jean Hsu & Buster Benson

If you’ve ever felt like there’s no space to figure out what you really want, you’re not alone. It’s so easy to stay busy — checking off tasks, fulfilling obligations, and striving to get to the next thing. We get really good at doing, but rarely stop to ask if it’s what we actually want. Without space to step back and reflect, it’s hard to break out of autopilot and make choices that are aligned with what we really want.

Creating Space is a 6-week self-paced journaling course designed to help you step back, breathe, and reconnect with what truly matters. Through thoughtful journaling prompts, reflection exercises, and a structured yet flexible approach, this course gives you space to explore new ideas, gain clarity, and discover what’s next for you.

This course is about making space for yourself — so that new possibilities, creative sparks, and meaningful insights can emerge naturally.

Why journaling?

The path from journaling to creating space may not be immediately obvious. One perspective is that carving out the time to journal is a small practice to create space for yourself. But then why not meditation or exercise or shopping or anything else? We’ve found private journaling to be particularly effective, and Buster’s post includes links to James Pennebaker’s research around this phenomenon. But I think it’s really something you have to experience. Personally, with just a few minutes of journaling, I feel more spacious about my day. Whenever I feel overwhelmed, I come back to my practice of journaling and within a few days, I feel more grounded.

Why 750 Words?

750 Words is an easy-to-use, private journaling platform designed to help you develop a consistent writing habit. It’s a safe space to explore your thoughts freely — without judgment or distractions. If you’d like to learn more about the impact of 750 Words, Buster’s post with testimonials is a great place to dive in and read about the many lives it has changed. Here’s one of my favorites:

"750 words has grounded and centered me and is a comforting voice to all that is going on in my mind, heart and soul. Anytime I am worried or upset I know writing these pages will calm, soothe, and give an authentic picture to what is going on in my inner world and space to bring out into to the open so that I can deal with the issues that arise. It's amazing how relaxing it is. This routine and habit has become for me something I do with joy and alacrity no matter what the mood is of the content matter of what I write."

What if I don’t have enough time and fall behind?

We’ll kickoff the course on Sunday, June 29th with the first set of prompts, but you’re welcome to go through the course at your own pace.

The writing prompts on 750 Words only move on once you use them! Feel free to take 2 months, 3 months, a year — whatever is most supportive (and if the daily accountability is helpful, then lean into that!).

As my then 6 year-old kid said, life’s not a race — everyone’s going different places.

Can I take this course with a friend?

Absolutely! Journaling alongside a friend can be a great way to stay motivated and deepen your reflections. If you’d also like to gift the course, email me at jean@jeanhsu.com and we’ll get it set up!
